The Simple Fix That Doubles Your Shooting Power

One of the issues I see most often when it comes to shooting is the plant foot being too far behind the ball.

When that happens, you lose your shot power and the ball tends to get more lift rather than forward trajectory.

In some cases, there isn’t even enough power for the shot to make it to the goal.

One Small Change Leads to Big Results

You can fix that by practicing good technique and placing your plant foot right next to the ball. It’s amazing how that little fix can double the power and accuracy of the shot within minutes.

Players who struggle with shooting are usually making this mistake without even realizing it. Once I point it out to them, everything changes.

They still have to practice it a lot to get used to where to put their foot, since establishing good habits takes time.

But their shot usually improves immediately.

How I Train the Technique

The first thing I do is show the player what a correct shot looks like.

I focus on showing the correct technique multiple times so the player has a clear mental image of what success looks like.

When a drill is simple and the visual is clear, the player can focus on their own technique without being confused.

To turn this insight into a permanent habit, I use a series of simple drills where the plant foot is the sole focus.

The main drill I use is a two-touch shooting to isolate the movement. It has two main steps:

  • A deliberate first touch to set up the shoot

  • A second touch where the only goal is landing the plant foot exactly next to the ball
